'Dragon Ball Super - Dragon Ball Cho': A new Dragon Ball series coming in June

It's been eighteen years but after the success of "Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods" and "Ressurection of F," Akira Toriyama and Toei Animation are officially going back to create a new "Dragon Ball" series that will follow the events of "Dragon Ball Z." The new series will be produced by Fuji Television.

According to a report from Famitsu, cited by IGN, the new series is tentatively titled "Dragon Ball Super" - "Dragon Ball Cho" in Japan - and will be set after the defeat of Majin Buu in "Dragon Ball Z." It is not yet confirmed if the events of the two aforementioned films are going to be acknowledged and if they are, where they will be set in the current chronology.

"I've used the word 'cho' (super) in so many commercials, games and other media, it is fantastic that the long awaited Dragon Ball Super will finally begin," said Masako Nozawa, Japanese voice actress of Son Goku and his sons. "I hope that this series will last a long time and have the same impact around the world as its predecessor."

"As I read the plot of the series I've already received from Akira Toriyama, my dreams for this begin to expand," stated Fuji TV Producer Osamu Nozaki. "An enemy even stronger than Buu or Freeza may appear."

This new villain may refer to Beerus, the God of Destruction featured primarily in "Battle of Gods," or an entirely new character.

The last "Dragon Ball" series to hit television was "Dragon Ball GT," which aired from 1996-1997. Akira Toriyama was not a part of the creative team and often cites that it is not a part of the main series' canon and should be considered a "what-if" series instead. "Dragon Ball Super" will ignore the events of Dragon Ball GT" and follow its own chronology.

While no release date in the West has been announced, IGN reports that the new series will air in Japan by July 2015.
