Hereford Cathedral open day for new choristers
The choir of Hereford Cathedral will be throwing open the doors of the Song School to potential new recruits on April 2.
The open rehearsal will give families with a boy between the ages of 6 and 9 the chance to observe the music-making that goes on in the fifteenth-century cathedral cloisters.
"We usually look for three boys each year to join the choir and for the right child, the choir provides a wonderful opportunity," said Geraint Bowen, director of music at the cathedral.
"As well as singing some of the most wonderful music ever written, they also have the chance to travel and perform in some remarkable places."
The choir has previously toured the US and South Africa, and perfromed in front of the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall.
Scholarships are paid by the cathedral to enable the choristers to attend Hereford Cathedral School.
Mr Bowen encouraged boys to consider joining the choir.
"Sometimes it only needs a grandparent, friend or school teacher to give someone a nudge that their son might be suitable as a chorister," he said.
"Many parents assume that their son has to be a musical genius to audition for the choir, but what we are looking for first and foremost is boys who enjoy singing, and being part of a close-knit team."
Families wishing to attend the open morning from 10:00am - 11:30am can find out further details at www.herefordcathedral.org
