KickAss Torrents, The Pirate Bay news: Top torrent sites getting new rival in rekindled MegaUpload?

Though KickAss Torrents and The Pirate Bay retain top spots as most-used file sharing sites, they may have competition soon, according to Kim DotCom.

According to Yibada, the MegaUpload creator plans to revive the filesharing site next year, adding that the new website may come out as early as January 2017. Reportedly, while MegaUpload will retain many of its features from the old website, there will also be tweaks and improvements. The creator also confirmed the news via Twitter.

While Dotcom has yet to come out with specific details, speculations suggest that some of the improvements over existing torrent sites include premium membership, a robust security and data protection, a larger storage space for up to 100GB for free and unlimited data transfer.

Founded in 2005, MegaUpload boasted of having more than 150 million registered users and 50 million daily visitors at the height of its online activities and was even deemed to have broken into the top 20 most frequently visited websites on the internet. However, much like how other file sharing sites have been branded to date, the website closed due to charges of piracy, and had been consequently raided by authorities. Dotcom himself and three others were arrested in 2012. Reportedly, Dotcom and his associates have cost film studios and record companies a staggering amount of losses amounting to more than $500 million due to MegaUpload.

Meanwhile, as KAT and TPB still try to evade authorities to continue their services (both websites are reported to have migrated to the Deep Web), other websites continue to have intermittent presence online. Just recently, another popular torrent site, BTDigg, has been shut down due to spam torrents.

The management stated, "We closed the site temporarily, but it's not hard to return. The main problem is 'spam' torrents. When we finish creating an AI that filters spam, we'll reopen the site."
