Samsung Gear VR 2 release date: New VR headgear to be unveiled soon?
Virtual reality aficionados are looking forward to the Samsung Gear VR 2. It is speculated to be arriving soon, together with the Samsung Galaxy Note 7.
A listing was spotted last week about a new Gear VR device with the model number SM-R323. SM-R322 is the current model, while SM-R321 was the previous one. However, no other information is available except that the new model was shipped to India for testing and evaluating purpose only and is not for sale, Tech Radar reported.
The tech community is speculating that the alleged new model will now contain a USB Type-C port. The previous model contains a micro-USB port and the Note 7 is rumored to have a Type-C port, so it won't be able to connect either way, hence a new VR headgear. It is also possible that the upcoming phone may not fit with the current generation of Gear VR.
MNR Daily reported that a Galaxy Unpacked event will happen on Aug. 2 and Samsung may take this opportunity to launch both products. The company may also throw in the VR headgear free for those getting the Galaxy Note 7.
VentureBeat mentioned that the new Samsung VR headgear will take part in Google's Daydream ecosystem, which is an Android VR operating system. The South Korean tech giant is said to be creating a Daydream-ready smartphone, rumored to be Note 7, and the new headset will offer compatibility for both the Oculus Home and Daydream. Oculus co-created the Gear VR.
For the meantime, those who want to get into the VR hype can take this opportunity to grab the current Samsung Gear VR. A4C is offering refurbished VR headgear units for US$54.95; Best Buy offers it for US$56.99, plus taxes. The price for a new one is US$99.99, CNET reported.
Fans can expect more news about the Samsung Gear VR 2 in the weeks to come.
