Fans have been waiting for the official announcement on who will be the next actor to portray Spider-Man ever since Sony and Marvel announced their partnership last February. More recently, top-runner Asa Butterfield allegedly did not get the role, according to a report from The Wrap, and now Marvel and Sony are at odds in choosing an actor. 

According to a report from Cinema Blend, Sony prefers Tom Holland who is most notable for his role in "The Impossible," while Marvel Studios prefers Charlie Plummer, popular for his short stint on "The Boardwalk Empire." Observers surmise that the difficulty arises from the two studios' different roles in the development of the new franchise. 

During a podcast report by Meet the Movie Press, reporter Jeff Sneider explained how and why the two studios allegedly cannot reach a mutual agreement regarding the casting of the new Spider-Man. He said that Marvel leads the creative department while Sony is on top of the financial aspect. Both, undoubtedly, have their own views on the matter. The report from Cinema Blend points out that these details — Marvel being the creative lead and Sony handling all finances regarding Spider-Man — were released to the public when the deal was initially announced back in February. The report also states that putting Spider-Man along with the likes of Thor, Captain America,and Iron Man will help the franchise financially. 

However, Cinema Blend also notes that it may be in Sony's main interest to just let Marvel take control. While Sony has done a good job with the two previous incarnations of Spider-Man, the financial returns of either franchise cannot hold a candle to the box office returns of "Iron Man 3," "The Avengers," or "Guardians of the Galaxy."
