'Super Smash Bros. 4' roster news: Character update may add Professor Layton

Professor Layton Nintendo

"Super Smash Bros." has seen several updates to its character roster on the Wii-U and 3DS, with the recent addition of Mewtwo, Lucas, Roy and Ryu. For the next update, there are rumors surfacing that Professor Layton, from the "Professor Layton" puzzle games on DS and 3DS, may be coming to the Nintendo fighting game very soon.

According to a report from TWInfinite, the rumors began when Christopher Robin Miller was listed on the IMDB page for the 3DS and Wii-U version of the game. Miller is known as the English voice actor for Professor Layton in all English versions of the "Professor Layton" video games. His name has since been taken down from the Wii-U IMDB page but remains on the 3DS IMDB page at the time of writing.

The rumors became more apparent when a Twitter user @LaytonSmash directly asked Miller if the information on the IMDB pages were true.

Miller immediately answered with, "I wasn't aware of that. It's not true."

That should have been confirmation that the character was not coming to the game but Miller later tweeted a message directed at @LaytonSmash stating, "Who wants to say it? My body can't contain the hype. Someone fill in the blank. ___ in Smash."

Miller then finished off with one more tweet to state that at this point, there is no official confirmation that Professor Layton will indeed be coming to "Super Smash Bros. 4."

The message does not confirm Layton's addition to the game but it doesn't rule it out either. After all, Nintendo is still holding their suggestion poll to let fans vote who they want to be added in the game. The poll will continue until Oct. 3 and Nintendo may be taking cues from the fans' suggestions.

Professor Layton may not be from an action-oriented video game franchise but neither is R.O.B, the Wii Fit Trainer, or the Villager from the "Animal Crossing" franchise, but all three have made it to "Super Smash Bros." for the Wii-U and 3DS.
