Katherine Langford, who stars as Hannah Baker in Netflix's "13 Reasons Why," is slated to be the main protagonist of upcoming science-fiction film "Spontaneous."

According to Deadline, the Golden Globe nominee will play the role of Mara Carlye, a high school senior who finds herself caught in a shattering world.

The movie is based on the Aaron Starmer young adult novel of the same title, which was a TIME magazine Top 10 YA & Children's Book for 2016 and an ALA Best Fiction for Young Adults selection.

"Spontaneous" features a town where humans are spontaneously exploding like blood-filled balloons, for no understandable reason. This sets the town in chaos, and Mara and her friends try to stick together as they await their possible combustion. The wait pushes the group to think about the lives they have lived and if it is still worth living.

The film will be written and directed by Brian Duffield ("Insurgent"). It will be produced by Matt Kaplan and Max Siemers of Awesomeness Films and Nicki Cortese via Jurassic Party Productions.

Langford was recently nominated for best performance by an actress in a television series (drama) for "13 Reasons Why."

On her Instagram Stories, she thanked the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for the nomination. She also wrote, "So excited to be nominated alongside this illustrious group of women."

Langford is nominated alongside Caitriona Balfe for "Outlander," Claire Foy for "The Crown," Maggie Gyllenhaal for "The Deuce," and Elisabeth Moss for "The Handmaid's Tale."

The 21-year-old actress is returning to reprise her role as Hannah in the series' second season, which recently wrapped up filming.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Brian Yorkey said Hannah's story in the drama is far from finished. "She's an integral part of whatever the next chapter of the story is, and she's very much still at the center of it," he shared.

"13 Reasons Why" season 2 is slated for release sometime in 2018.
