A new hero was introduced in the trailer for "24: Legacy" that had been released months before its pilot premiere next year.

For the first time since 2001, FOX's serial crime drama thriller will feature a new protagonist named Eric Carter. The army ranger, portrayed by "Straight Outta Compton" star Corey Hawkins, will take over the lead from Keith Sutherland's character, Counter Terrorist Unit Agent Jack Bauer.

The trailer revealed that the real-time narration that was used in the original "24" series has been retained in the spin-off. This means that Carter must race against time in order to stop a massive destruction from happening in the U.S. due to another terrorist attack.

Joining Hawkins in the new spinoff series are Miranda Otto as former CTU head Rebecca Ingram, Jimmy Smits as Rebecca's husband and US presidential candidate John Donovan, Teddy Sears as current CTU supervisor Keith Mullins, Anna Diop as Carter's wife Nicole, Dan Bucatinsky as CTU communication analyst Andy Shalowitz, Coral Pena as computer analyst Mariana Stiles, as well as Veronica Cartwright as Donovan's mother Margaret.

Meanwhile, Sutherland was asked by TV Guide in an interview about how he feels about seeing the show without the involvement of his iconic character. According to the actor, fans of the series should still be excited to watch the show even if he is not in it because the real essence of the show is the plot and not Jack Bauer.

He also commended the new cast of the series. "I think they've done an incredible job casting it, and the first couple of episodes are fantastic. I've always believed very strongly that the star of 24 was the idea ... I hope people give it a chance, and I'll be one of the first in line to watch it," the actor said in the interview.

The first episode of "24: Legacy" will air on Feb. 5 following the 2017 Super Bowl.
