It is not unusual for the 49ers to have a slightly spotty start to the season, and in their recent history under Jim Harbaugh they have repeatedly struggled for early season consistency.

Last season they managed to win their season opener against the Green Bay Packers but went on to lose their next two consecutive games against the Seattle Seahawks and the Indianapolis Colts.

Also in 2012 they could only manage a 2-1 start, where as in 2011 they stuttered to 1-1.

However, they have consistently recovered from their early season problems, and in each of those seasons they managed to finish the season with at least 11 wins and qualify for the postseason.

Last week they fell to a 20-28 loss to the Chicago Bears on Sunday Night Football. They will be extremely disappointed in that result seeing as they were 17-0 up at one point in the game.

That means they come into this week with a vital game against a division rival who is 2-0 and atop of the highly competitive NFC West.

The Cardinals have defeated both the San Diego Chargers and the New York Giants so far this season, but Colin Kaepernick and the 49ers will be a completely different type of challenge and they will have to be right at the top of their game if they want to move to 3-0.
