5 Bible verses for when loneliness creeps in

Nobody wants to be lonely. We don't want the feeling of being alone in a crowd. We dislike the idea that no one cares and no one understands us. No one wants to be lonely.

As God's people, we're always told that God will never leave us nor forsake us. God actually promised that, but the truth is that until we arrive at a level of faith and intimacy with Him, where we are actually conscious of His ever-present and indwelling presence with us no matter where we go any time of any day, we will experience loneliness, especially at times of need.

Still, the Bible remains fixed on the matter: we are not alone. God knows that it's not good for man to be alone, that's why He gave us relationships - with each other and, more importantly, with Him through Christ. He knows that being alone isn't good for us, that's why He gave us what we will need to fight it: His love.

This article is written for all my Christian brothers and sisters who feel lonely for any reason. You can be with people and still feel like you're alone. You can be in the middle of your church and still feel like no one understands you. You can be with people and still feel like there's no one who cares for you.

When you feel that way, remember first of all that these feelings are totally normal and natural to feel from time to time, and then secondly, that God is with you.

Here are a few Bible verses that will help you fight the unwanted feeling of loneliness. Read them and meditate on them when loneliness starts to creep up on you.

Psalm 23

"The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever."

Psalm 27:10

"When my father and my mother forsake me, then the Lord will take care of me."

Psalm 147:2-4

"The Lord builds up Jerusalem; He gathers together the outcasts of Israel. He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. He counts the number of the stars; He calls them all by name."

Romans 8:14-17

"For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, "Abba, Father." The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together."

1 Peter 5:6-7

"Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you."
