'A Way Out' news: Publisher EA will reportedly not profit from co-op prison escape game

Electronic Arts (EA) is apparently not planning on cashing out in "A Way Out" as the game's publisher is reportedly not gaining anything from the cooperative (co-op) prison game.

Hazelight, the developer of the game, and its executives have claimed that their publisher EA is not making a single dollar out of the game. Apparently, the co-op prison game is part of the EA Originals program in which 100 percent of the game's profits from sales go to the developers only, despite receiving a hefty financial support from the publisher.

This much was revealed by Josef Fares, the director of "A Way Out" during an interview with GameSpot. The interview was more of a gameplay showcase video featuring how the co-op split-screen works and plays out in one monitor or television only. Some gameplay points were also discussed as well as some story and technical features of the game, but nevertheless, some financial details were discussed too.

"[EA has been] super supportive. If [EA] wants to make an apple greener, I can say no to that. It's only been supportive. The [EA Originals] deal, they're giving 100 percent of the income to the developers. They're not making a single dollar on this game. I'm a passion guy, I believe in what I do. If somebody said 'Take $10 million to make [A Way Out] single player, I would say no.' Yeah, of course, publishers f*ck up sometimes. [...] [EA] is a big company. We all make mistakes, but for me, EA has been super good. Very nice people," according to Fares.

This ultimately means EA really just funded "A Way Out" for free and with nothing in return if Fares' words are anything to go by. Meanwhile, the development team of Fares initially consisted of only 10 people, and he also admitted that he did a lot of the game's motion capture stunts by himself. With EA's generosity, Fares' development team will surely benefit a lot from "A Way Out" which gets released on Mar. 23 for the PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 (PS4).
