While Google's own operating system is a hit in some circles because the company is pairing it up with their own Chromebooks, the OS is still slow to gain traction.

Well-known tech manufacturer Acer hopes to change all that, and is set to launch an all-in-one Chromebase desktop. What is different though, is that the new Chromebase comes with a 21.5-inch touchscreen.

In a slew of Chrome OS-based products being launched by Google early this year, pundits are asking why Acer would gamble with a Chrome-based product right off at the start of the year. The Google operating system is still a newbie in terms of OS popularity, notes research firm Gartner.

In a report by PCWorld, the operating system is mainly known only in North America, since global users still prefer Windows. Moreover, the Google OS still have a long way to go in terms of programs and applications.

Said Tracy Tsai, an analyst in the firm: "The vendors always want to find any possibility to grow the market segment, and perhaps the all-in-one will find a place in schools."

Aside from the moderately big 21.5-inch touchscreen that is able to display full HD 1080p resolution, the new Chromebase also comes with 10-point touch technology. Also, the screen of the new Chromebase is VESA-compliant, providing 178-degree viewing display so users can have flexible viewing options from almost any angle.

Acer is also marketing its new Chromebase as an astounding workhorse, able to keep up with both work and play use. Since it is powered by an Nvidia Tegra K1 quad-core processor, it boots up in 10 seconds flat and also provides multiple layers of built-in security for data.

The new Chromebase also has both USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports, WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0 for wireless connectivity. Aside from that, it has built-in HD webcam and two audio speakers.

The new Chromebase is expected to arrive in North America and Asia in the second half of the year.
