An African-American family was told the leave the Lindenhurst community in Long Island, New York, because it's "84 percent white population."

Ronica Copes said she received the letter from the mail.

"Sooooo, I'm checking my mail and when I come across this I can't help but laugh...wait, it's not funny though. Where they do that at? Oh yeah Lindenhurst. Unbelievable but then it's not...our daily reality, I've just never seen it in this form," Copes posted on Facebook.

The letter said, "Attn: African-American family. This is coming from Linderhurst community. Linderhurst is 84% white population."

"You don't belong here!!!" the letter said. "Please leave Linderhurst as soon as you can. It will be better for all of us. Find the town where there are more people like you. Sorry if this is rude, but it's the truth."

Her post drew indignation against the letter sender.

Suffolk County executive Steven Bellone condemned the incident. "To the coward who committed a hate crime against an innocent family in Lindenhurst — There is no place for intolerance in Suffolk County. I know the Suffolk County Police Department will do everything possible to solve this hate crime, out you and see you punished. I stand together with all Lindenhurst residents who decry this act of hatred. This community and all of Suffolk County are better than that," he said in a statement, according to PIX11 Morning News.

The police are investigating the incident as a hate crime.

"Hey my FB friends....update: A hate crime investigator just left my home. Next step – Broadcast Media. Thank you all for sharing your frustrations, opinions, suggestions, and concerns! Will keep you abreast of the outcome," Copes posted on Facebook.

She thanked everyone for their concern.

"I would like to express my sincere appreciation to EVERYONE that has shown concern and shared kind words on behalf of my family and I. The support and well wishes that we've received here on Long Island and abroad have been overwhelmingly positive. I am a firm believer in everyone and everything having a purpose, and so I will use this 'mess' to convey a 'message.' Stay tuned....." she said.
