Coulson (Clark Gregg) will be in a dark place after that action-packed winter finale of the hit ABC series "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D."

Although the S.H.I.E.L.D leader has successfully returned to Earth after killing Ward (Brett Dalton), he is still strung up knowing he failed to save Rosalind (Constance Zimmer). Coulson will reportedly mourn his loss that he will spend the second half of season 3 coming to terms with her death. The fact that he cold-blooded killed a human will also settle heavily in his mind, as well as in Fitz's (Iain De Caestecker), who witnessed him ending Ward's (Brett Dalton) life.

Executive producer Jeff Bell told The Hollywood Reporter that it would be hard for Coulson to deal with everything that transpired, especially the instant he compromised his character to get revenge. Coulson could have left Ward alive after beating him to a pulp, but he chose to finish the job anyway. He pushed down hard against the bad guy's chest with his robotic arm until Ward's heart stopped beating. The top man of S.H.I.E.L.D will reportedly regret that he had to deviate from his principles, even if it happened in one of his weakest and most unsteady moment.

"Where Coulson is now is a much darker place, having lost someone who clearly meant the world to him in a way he didn't know he could feel again. The fact that Ward took Rosalind away from him enraged him in such a way that he compromised his character, albeit in a very cool, epic way... Coulson doesn't feel great about that," Bell said.

Although Ward the mortal is gone, viewers can expect that he will still be seen in season 3B, as his body is currently being possessed by the powerful Inhuman from Maveth. The executive producer hinted that the creature would be a force to reckon with, as it could be the thing responsible for the destruction of the other planet. He said that Earthlings should be "very, very afraid" now that it is already in the same world they are in.

"Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." season 3 will return on March 8, 2016 at 9 p.m. EST on ABC.
