'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' season 4 news update: New time slot to allow for 'more edge, more grit'

ABC

Continuing the new timeslot, season 4 of "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." will have darker undertones, according to the show's creators.

Speaking to Comic Book Resources at the Comic-Con International, Jeph Loeb, head of Marvel Television, stated that the new time slot for the show will enable them to set a story that is more mature.

The studio executive stated, "By going to 10 o'clock, we're going to be taking on just a little bit more edge, a little bit more grit."

"Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." has an original timeslot of 8 p.m. on ABC, before being bumped to 9 p.m. for its second and third seasons. Teasing that the later time slot is actually good for the show, according to Loeb, who added, "The show is pretty violent for something at 9 o'clock, but when we get to 10 o'clock, we're going to be just a little hair of something that I think people are going to really enjoy."

Meanwhile, although the over-all plot for season 4 has yet to become official, a new direction is being rumored for the next installment of the show. "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." season 3 ended with Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) stepping down as the director, as well as Daisy Johnson (Chloe Bennet) parting ways with the superspy organization. It is confirmed though, that season 4 will open as a six-month time jump from the end of the previous season. S.H.I.E.L.D. will come under the helm of yet-unnamed new character, to be played by Jason O'Mara. In addition, a new superhero is set to appear in the new season, as it is revealed that another big-name Marvel character, Ghost Rider (Gabriel Luna) will debut.

As for what's in store for Daisy Johnson in the new season, Chloe Bennet believes that the new season will have fans see her leaning more towards becoming the Inhuman Quake.

She adds, "I know her intentions are to do right by her team by distancing herself from them but she's actually hurting them and I don't think she's making the right decisions."

"Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." is set to return for season 4 on Sept. 20 at 10 p.m. on ABC.
