'Agents of SHIELD' season 4 spoilers: Ghost Rider's origin will be different

Robbie Reyes as the Ghost RiderMarvel Comics

"Agents of SHIELD" is considerably shaking up the series' formula, with Coulson (Clark Gregg) back as an agent and someone new as the director, Daisy Johnson aka Skye (Chloe Bennet) on the run as a fugitive and, as stated in a report from TVLine, Roberto "Robbie" Reyes aka the third Ghost Rider having his origin story slightly tweaked from the comic book version.

In the original comic books, Robbie became the Ghost Rider when he was driving a car that contained illegal drug pills owned by the villain Calvin Zabo aka Mister Hyde. Mercenaries working for Zabo gunned Robbie and the car down but this awoke the spirit possessing the car and revived Robbie as the Ghost Rider.

It is noted that the spirit in the car is his late, murderous uncle and not a true Spirit of Vengeance such as the one that gives Johnny Blaze his Ghost Rider powers and form.

However, this oriign story might not play out this way in the series. One part of this is because the villain Calvin Zabo has been portrayed in the series by Kyle MacLachlan and it was revealed that Zabo is in fact Daisy's biological father. This will tie her directly into the origin story of Robbie Reyes, who will be played by Gabriel Luna.

"We can't say much about what we're going to do with Robbie Reyes' origin, but we are doing our own spin on it," explained co-showrunner Jed Whedon. "We don't want people who have read the comics to know exactly what's coming."

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Bennet also explained that it is unlikely Robbie and Daisy will get along at first and that they do not have friendly interactions. She notes they have similar backstories and that they are both misunderstood individuals but at this point Daisy just wants to have nothing to lose due to her pain and loss.

"Agents of SHIELD" season 4 will premiere on Sept. 20.
