'Alien: Covenant' news, spoilers: Filming completed; New image teases possible connection to 'Alien' and 'Aliens'

Filming wraps for Alien: CovenantTwitter via ALien Anthology

Filming for "Alien: Covenant" has just been completed and director Ridley Scott has put out an official Twitter post via the "Alien Anthology" account, revealing an image of actress Katherine Waterston on set.  As stated in a report from Comic Book, Waterston's appearance looks very similar to that of Ellen Ripley, played by Sigourney Weaver.

It is speculated that Waterston's character might be the mother to Ripley or may have some sort of connection given that "Alien: Covenant" is not just a sequel to the 2012 film "Prometheus" but is also a prequel to the 1979 film "Alien" and its 1986 sequel "Aliens."

The report also points out that Waterston's character, named Daniels, might not have any connections at all and this could just be a tribute of some sorts to the Ripley character. It is even possible that her character plays a very minor role compared to that of the other stars such as Michael Fassbender's David or Noomi Rapace's Dr. Elizabeth Shaw.

A report by /Film also points out that there is a possibility the character won't be making it out alive. The Xenomorph alien is going to make an appearance in the film and previous images from the set showcase the character exhausted and afraid, hinting that the horrors that the franchise is known for will be in the new movie.

Gamespot also reveals that actor Danny McBride will be in the film as the ship's captain and main helmsman but while McBride is known for his comedic roles he is not going to be the comedic relief in the film.

"Well why would he be interested in me for this? Am I just going to be the silly comic relief?' And then I got the script and I'm like, 'This [expletive] is dark. There is no comic relief in this at all,'" the actor explained.

"Alien: Covenant" opens in theaters on Aug. 4, 2017.
