Director Ridley Scott recently sat down for an interview with IGN where he explained some of the details regarding "Alien: Paradise Lost," the upcoming follow-up to the 2012 film "Prometheus." During the interview, Scott confirmed that "Alien: Paradise Lost" will explore and showcase who or what created the titular aliens.

During the interview, Scott explained, "I'm trying to re-resurrect the beast and let if off the hook for a while because I'm coming back into the back-end of 'Alien 1.' I'm gradually getting to 'Alien 1.'"

However, during the interview, it was implied that someone other than the Engineers may have created the Xenomorphs.

"Prometheus 2 will start getting shot in February and I've already begun now so I know what the script is. Then there will be another one after that and then maybe we'll back into 'Alien 1, 'as to why? Who would make such a dreadful thing?" the director was quoted as saying.

The Alien, more commonly known as the Xenomorph to fans, first starred as the main enemy in Ridley Scott's 1979 sci-fi horror film "Alien." During that first film, it was shown that a spaceship was carrying hundreds of Xenomorph eggs and it was hinted that the Xenomorph may have been created by the alien race known as the Engineers.

In "Prometheus" it was revealed that the Engineers created humans and have also created some sort of black fluid containing a bacterial lifeform that could mutate. At the end of the film, the black fluid eventually evolved into what many presumed to be a form of prototype version of the Xenomorph.

As stated in the report from IGN, Scott's comments confirmed that the films will form a "Prometheus" trilogy in which they will eventually lead up to the events of the first "Alien" film, explaining in full the origin of the Aliens and why the Engineers created humans only to later seek their destruction.

"Alien: Paradise Lost" will begin production in February 2016 and will release in 2017.
