AMD Vega 64 and 56 leaving Nvidia in the dust with 'Forza 7' benchmarks

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is trading blows with NVIDIA, as the former's RX Vega 64 and Vega 56 both trump NVIDIA's top of the line graphics processing unit's (GPU) performance by a large margin in "Forza Motorsport 7."

ComputerBase conducted the benchmarks for the said game and revealed that the AMD's GPUs are significantly ahead of NVIDIA's GTX 1080 Ti, which is the latter's most powerful GPU in the 10-series. AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 scored an all-time high of 136.9 frames per second (FPS) in the benchmarks for "Forza 7." It was followed by its weaker and more budget-friendly version, RX Vega 56, which scored 122.7 FPS. Meanwhile, the GTX 1080 Ti from NVIDIA scored 111.2 FPS.

It is worth noting that the benchmarks were done using an Intel Core i7 6850K processor, which was overclocked to 4.3 gigahertz (GHz), 16 gigabytes (GB) of DDR4-3000 random access memory (RAM), with AMD Vega using Crimson ReLive 17.9.3 drivers and NVIDIA GTX using GeForce 385.69 drivers. PC owners trying to replicate the results may find varying scores due to hardware disparity.

Hot Hardware, however, compelled readers to keep in mind that the recorded results were only for one game and do not represent what both video cards can do for other games. Still, the benchmark results spelled out a clear win for AMD, especially when the price is considered, as the Vega 64 costs a minimum of $499, the Vega 56 costs $399, and NVIDIA's GTX 1080 Ti costs around $750.

The said benchmark win for AMD was also only for a resolution of 1080p (1920 x 1080). A resolution of 1440p (2560 x 1440) lessened the gap between AMD and NVIDIA, and surprisingly, 4K (3840 x 2160) resolution benchmarks actually put the GTX 1080 Ti ahead of Vega 64 by about 7 FPS. At 4K resolution, Vega 56 tied with NVIDIA's GTX 1080, a weaker version of GTX 1080 Ti.

The higher resolution benchmarks may be something that users want to consider when planning to purchase either the AMD or NVIDIA flagship GPU since both specialize in resolutions higher than 1080p. Future buyers may also want to check out other game benchmarks for both GPUs before making their decision.
