"American Gods" executive producers Michael Green and Bryan Fuller recently opened up about what is to come in the second season of the Starz series.

Chatting with Nerdist, the two revealed that season 2 will have more freedom to explore things now that they have already established the narrative and introduced the characters to the viewers.

"The second season has so much more energy and drive than the first season, because we spent eight episodes trying to establish a vocabulary, not only for the audience but for Shadow Moon to understand the world that he's been plunged into," explained Fuller.

Viewers learned about the world of "American Gods" universe at the same pace as Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle). Now that both character and fans are familiar with the world, Fuller believes they can finally dig deeper into the character stories.

Per Screen Rant, fans will learn more about the characters' different roles, expansions for some, and even the addition of some new faces that were not in the books.

As far as expansions go, the showrunners spoke about the role of women on "American Gods" and how they beefed up and expanded many of the characters from Neil Gaiman's novel. In fact, Bilquis (Yetide Badaki) and Easter (Kristin Chenoweth) were part of the first conversation the duo.

The creators wanted the show to have a more balanced voice and to explore the female characters further. It turns out Gaiman wanted the same thing, but he could not write more because of the book's limited amount of page count. Thankfully, a TV series has a lot more room to explore an entire cast of characters than a novel does.

"American Gods" premiered on Starz in April. It follows Shadow Moon, who is embroiled in a large-scale conflict between the Old Gods and the New Gods. The network already renewed the show for a second season, but it has yet to announce an official return date.
