With Floyd Mayweather Jr. almost certain to face Andre Berto this coming September, many were asking how in the world Amir Khan got eased out of the picture.

Khan was the obvious favorite to face off with Mayweather in what is supposed to be latter's farewell bout; but as it turns out, the unbeaten American boxer is opting to go with a less credible fighter in Andre Berto.

This is not to take away anything from Berto. The guy is a good fighter. But when one talks about main bouts, it remains that there are far more credible names like Khan, Gennady Golovkin, Miguel Cotto or even Kell Brook to choose from. So out of all the names that Mayweather could pick out, he opts for an easy fight to simply get to 49-0.

Khan accepted that fact when word came out that Berto would be the guy to face Mayweather in September. But what he does not accept is the claim of the Mayweather camp that talks bogged down because he "talked too much" to the press.

Such is being singled out as the reason why Khan was ruled out as a possible opponent and Khan vehemently denied such.

According to Khan, no one from the Mayweather camp bothered to touch base with him and capped it all off by saying that it was perhaps the only excuse they could think of to justify the choice of Berto.

In a way, Khan may have a point. As mentioned earlier, there are plenty of boxers to choose from. Why Berto?

If he had his way, Khan would have had a perfect record as well. But he does emphasize that he does not cherry-pick his opponents the way Mayweather does.

Regardless, everything seems moot and academic. But one thing is for sure, it is hard to believe that this would be Mayweather's last fight. Could Khan be back in the running in case Mayweather decides to fight again next year?
