When Sony Mobile came out with a list of lineups that would receive the new Android 6.0 Marshmallow update, it was already expected that the iterations under the major Xperia Z lineup are among the many devices that would be updated. However, many fans were disappointed to know that the OTA updates will stop with the Xperia Z2 variants.

Users of Xperia Z1 then petitioned online for Sony Mobile to include the Z1 versions in the upcoming Android 6.0 update rollout.

In their petition post at change.org, Xperia Z1 owners argued that although their devices can already be considered as an outdated device (compared to the series of newer lineups currently out in the market), the Xperia Z1 remains as one of the most stable smartphones on the market. In addition, while it was one of the earliest releases among the Xperia Z lineup, the Xperia Z1 still passes the required tech specs for a stable update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow, and is closer to the specs sheet of the Xperia Z2 versions, which were included on the update list.

Although Sony Mobile did leave out the Xperia Z1 on the list of devices that will be updated to the new Android version, it did not confirm if the list they came out with previously is the complete one. Sony Mobile has many devices in different lineups under its belt, and it might come out with another list after the first round of Android 6.0 updates is finished. The post on the Sony Mobile blog also mentions that it has "been working hard to bring this major update to as many of our devices as possible, as quickly as we can."

Meanwhile, tech-savvy users who are also Xperia Z1 owners can update their devices to the stock Android 6.0 ROM. Previously, NeuroGadget reported that the source files for Android Marshmallow have already been published in Sony's Android Open Source Project.
