In what many deem as surprising, Verizon has announced that U.S. based owners will soon enjoy the Android 5.0 Lollipop update. The first handset on the block to get the update will be the Samsung Galaxy S5.

Expected to come in early 2015, the update should be available any time soon for S5 owners. And this development could signal that other mobile carriers could follow suit as well, particularly for their subscribers who also have the S5.

And while the announcement seems to cut the usually tardy updates from Verizon, that could still be the case though for other Samsung models such as the Galaxy Note 3, Note 4 and S4 among others. To date, there are already users who have gotten the update and have started (or already) downloaded it.

With the new Android 5.0 Lollipop, here are the things you can expect to get:

  1. New Material Designs. The new OS will provide users all new material designs meaning that they can expect new animations, themes and 3D views.
  2. Improved Basic Action. The update will provide better color and fluid animation which include the on/off button getting an update as well.
  3. Improved Lock Screens. Users will be able to set privacy for their notifications on lock screens with shortcuts to the phone and camera included.
  4. TouchWiz. Users will be able to access apps anytime easily with the floating action buttons.
  5. Interruptions. The new feature provides users the ability to control their sound settings and set up priorities on events and reminders. This includes the ability to set some downtime as well to control notification sounds.
  6. Recent apps page. Users will be able to access their Chrome tabs from the Recent apps page while Multi-window icons account for easy to use multi-tasking users.

The update could be available right now so it would be best to check on the phone settings regularly.
