Search engine giant Google announced its latest operating system (OS), initially dubbed as Android M, successor to the Lollipop version, during the company's I/O conference back in May. The company has now finally unveiled the official name of its latest OS; it is now known as the Android Marshmallow. 

The Android Marshmallow is scheduled to be released this fall.

Also back in May, Google released the operating system's developer preview for the Nexus 5, Nexus 6, and Nexus 9 devices, including the Nexus Player. A few days ago, the company just launched the final preview, according to reports, for the same devices mentioned.

According to Gotta Be Mobile, the new Android 6.0 Marshmallow is smoother, faster, and can extend battery life for devices. Other features include improved security and support for fingerprint scanners, USB Type-C port connection, Android Pay, and Google's latest mobile wallet as well.

This year, the search engine giant is expected to release two new Nexus devices, which will be among the first to run on the Android Marshmallow. These devices have been in the works alongside South Korean giant LG Electronics Inc. and Chinese telecom firm Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd.

Other features that Android Marshmallow will have include Doze. Doze has the ability to recognize device inactivity, which can then help extend battery life, according to Google.

According to Gotta Be Mobile, the update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow could arrive sometime in September, or possibly by early October. The report adds that users who want to try the developer version at this time, must be careful, as it is possible that it might come with bugs and instabilities.

Other news include Apple's plan to release its own latest OS offering, the iOS 9. Meanwhile, software giant Microsoft Corporation has just released its new Windows 10 OS last month.
