'Ant-Man and the Wasp' news: Michael Peña may have just confirmed Marvel's trilogy plans

Marvel has kept its plans beyond "Avengers 4" under wraps, but "Ant-Man 3" could very well be on the cards.

The latest scoop comes from "Ant-Man and the Wasp" actor Michael Peña himself when asked how he and fellow Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) actor Chris Hemsworth spoke about their shared universe on the set of military drama "12 Strong."

While Peña says they barely talked about it, the actor who plays fan-favorite Luis may have let slip an interesting detail about the future of the franchise and his character.

"It's a whole different kind of club to be in, the Marvel Universe," Peña told IGN. "I don't know if they'll use me for the third movie, I still really don't know. It's cool to make a little bit of a mark on that Marvel Universe and it's kind of a cool club, they run a really cool studio."

His statement is by no means any confirmation, but it is an early indicator that Marvel has plans to make the franchise into a trilogy. Then again, news of a third film is somehow no surprise given Marvel has done the same in its first batch of franchises. Apart from "Ant-Man," "Captain Marvel, "Doctor Stranger," and "Black Panther" will likely get sequels of their own as well.

Of course, things may still depend on the sequel's performance. Should it fail to score big at the box office, their plans for an "Ant-Man" threequel could be easily scrapped; and even if they do move forward with "Ant-Man 3," there will likely be no announcements made anytime soon.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has previously said they are not saying anything about MCU's future films until Phase 3 wraps with "Captain Marvel" in 2019. In the meantime, fans can look forward to seeing Scott Lang's (Paul Rudd) back in action as MCU's tiny superhero in "Ant-Man and the Wasp." As the title hints, it will introduce Evangeline Lilly's Hope van Dyne as the latter titular superhero.

Peña will be back as Scott's partner in heisting operations alongside Michael Douglas (Hank Pym). Directed by Peyton Reed, "Ant-Man and the Wasp" premieres on July 6.
