Apple's senior VP dismisses idea of touchscreen Macs

Apple's senior vice president of software engineering, Craig Federighi, announced that the company is not interested in building a touchscreen Mac.

He told CNET of the disappointing news after the company's special event launching their new iPad and Mac. According to Federighi, a touchscreen Mac is not something the huge company will likely invest on. He further explained that the Mac is something of a "sit-down" experience, unlike the iPad or iPhone which can be used in a "very relaxed position."

Users can imagine themselves reaching out to their Mac's screen display while sitting on their chairs.

"We don't think it's the right interface, honestly," the senior VP added, as he explained that it will be awkward and difficult for Mac users to constantly reach toward the screen. He even made a comparison to their iPads and iPhones, saying that these two handsets can be basically used anywhere comfortably.

Although the idea of touchscreen Macs has become next to impossible, Apple is continuously building the best trackpads to make the Mac experience more comfortable in a posture that is relaxing for its users. Federighi admitted that they did try experimenting over the years in finding the best technology, and ended up saying touchscreen Macs are nowhere near the solution.

For the last two years, other giant computer manufacturing companies started venturing into touchscreen interfaces. Companies like Dell and Asus built devices using Microsoft's Windows 8 software, which was released in 2012, incorporating touchscreen capabilities on their laptops and desktops. However, Apple is still disinterested in the idea.

If touchscreen Macs are not part of Apple's future plans, many are hoping for a hybrid device after the iPad Pro is released early next year. These hybrid devices can be converted from tablets to laptops and vice versa.  And since the so-called iPad Pro is rumored to be sporting a huge 12.9-inch display, can tech enthusiasts expect a hybrid iPad-laptop device next year?
