"Wonder Woman" has set itself up as a prequel to "Justice League," which will be followed by the standalone "Aquaman" movie in 2018. While Diana Prince's story is set primarily during the events of World War I, Jason Momoa's solo outing as Arthur Curry will be different as it will take place after the "Justice League" timeline.

In an interview with Cinema Blend, "Aquaman" executive producer Charles Roven confirmed that "Aquaman" will take place after the events in Zack Snyder's "Justice League."

"Aquaman will make reference [to Justice League]. There will be some reference of something that preceded Aquaman that will be in Aquaman. I believe that is the intention," Roven explained.

The connection between "Justice League" and "Aquaman" is evident in the fact that Amber Heard's Mera and Willem Dafoe's Vulko will make an appearance in the superhero ensemble film. Moreover, Atlantis is the location of one of the Motherboxes, which are powerful instruments central to the "Justice League" plot.

Even though "Aquaman" will be set primarily in the post-"Justice League" timeline, Roven said they are still exploring storylines that took place many years before and that the entire DC Extended Universe isn't limiting itself to a particular time period.

Meanwhile, "Aquaman" is shaping up to become one of the most hotly anticipated films in 2018. The A-list cast includes Nicole Kidman, who will play Arthur Curry's mother, Queen Atlanna. When EW asked how Kidman was convinced to take the role, she said that it's because of director James Wan.

"He's a really good friend of mine, and he offered to let me play Queen Atlanna," Kidman shared. "As soon as he said I could wear mother-of-pearl and be a mermaid warrior, I said I'm done. Please. If there is one thing I have to do in my life, I have to be that. [Laughs] Because, you've got to have some fun."

"Aquaman" will hit theaters on Dec. 21, 2018.
