"The Expendables" actor Dolph Lundgren has recently been cast in DC's upcoming "Aquaman" standalone film, starring Jason Momoa as the telepathic king of Atlantis and the oceans.

Lundgren will be portraying the underwater king of Xebel, Nereus. The character is not exactly on good terms with the titular character. He holds a grudge against Aquaman. To add, he fancies Aquaman's queen, Mera (Amber Heard). Based on the "Death of a King" arc written by Geoff Johns, Mera and Nereus have history. The queen of the oceans was once part of the Xebels, which is composed of exiled Atlanteans.

Little is known about the plot of "Aquaman," but it could easily include Johns' arc, given that there is only limited content for the character. But, the film could introduce new arcs for Nereus. To note, Aquaman is a DC legend, meanwhile, Nerues is a relatively new character to the series. So far, the character has appeared in only five issues of the "Aquaman" comic books and seven issues of "Bombshells."

The mentioned stars will be joined by Nicole Kidman as Queen Atlanna, Willem Dafoe as Vulko, Patrick Wilson as Orm, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, and Temuera Morrison as Aquaman's father.

As previously reported, "Aquaman" is still in the initial stages of production. Director James Wan told audiences at the "Aquaman" panel at Cinema Con that he will be in Australia to start filming for the movie. At the event, Wan promised audiences that they will deliver a spectacular underwater world.

Momoa will appear as "Aquaman" in the upcoming "Justice League" film, which will debut later this year. He will star alongside Ben Affleck, who will portray Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Ezra Miller as The Flash, and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman.

"Aquaman" is slated to premiere on Dec. 21, 2018, while "Justice League" is expected to air in November this year.
