Dating as far back as 1941, comic book fans have come to know and love Archie Comics. It was announced today that the lead character Archie, is set to die this July.

CEO of Archie Comics announced today, that Archie, one of America's most beloved comic book characters will die in the final two issues of one of its most recent series, Life with Archie. This series which began five years ago, focuses on Archie and friends' adult life after college.

"'Life With Archie' is Archie's future," Co-CEO/ Archie Comics Publisher Jon Goldwater told CNN. "It gives readers a look into what his life would be like after high school and college, which has never really been explored."

Issue no. 36 will look into Archie's last moments, while the final issue, no. 37, will focus on Archie's gang of friends, which includes beloved characters Jughead, Betty, Veronica and Reggie. The friends will reminisce on the good times they had with redheaded New Yorker, Archie, who was first introduced to the world in 1941.

USA Today reports that both issues feature covers by prominent comic book artists including Fiona Staples, Walt Simonson, Francesco Francavilla, Jill Thompson, Alex Ross, Cliff Chiang, Mike Allred, and Adam Hughes.

"Archie has and always will represent the best in all of us — he's a hero, goodhearted, humble and inherently honorable," Co-CEO/ Archie Comics Publisher Jon Goldwater said in a statement. "This story is going to inspire a wide range of reactions because we all feel so close to Archie."

Although we've seen a few comic book deaths in recent years (Captain America, Batman and Superman), the good news for Archie fans is that the redheaded teenager will live on in other Archie comic book series.
