Arsenal failed to get back on the win column today, Sunday, when they hosted and lost (0–1) to the defending Premier League champions Chelsea, who have been struggling this season trying to defend their title.

The Gunners were coming off draws in their last two Premier League outings, versus Liverpool (3–3) and Stoke City (0–0).

Before those games, Arsenal were in a two-match winning streak, capturing victories over AFC Bournemouth (2–0) and Newcastle United (1–0).

Prior to Sunday's loss, Arsenal were third in the Premier League table with 44 points, tied with Manchester City who were sitting on the second spot, behind the league-leading Leicester City (47 points).

A win over Chelsea this Sunday would have given Arsenal 47 points, enough to tie them with Leicester City for the lead in the table, while a loss or draw would have kept them to where they were.

Meanwhile, Chelsea have not lost in the Premier League since manager Guus Hiddink took over following the sacking of Jose Mourinho.

Hiddink was appointed on Dec. 19, 2015 and helped the Blues get two wins and four draws in league play.

Despite the recent improvement, the Blues are still trying to climb in the table. Prior to the game against Arsenal, they were 14th with 25 points, tied with AFC Bournemouth who were 15th in the league.

Chelsea were looking for a win since they were coming off two draws versus West Bromwich Albion (2–2) and Everton (3–3).

Before defeating Arsenal, the last Premier League win captured by the Blues was against Crystal Palace earlier this month.

Chelsea's win over the Gunners today, Jan. 24, gave them 28 points to tie 13th-placed West Bromwich Albion.

But still, having 28 points did not help the defending Premier League champions go into the top 10 in the league's table.
