"Assassin's Creed" is a growing franchise, with multiple games, comic books, and novels expanding the main storyline. A live-action movie adaptation is set to launch this December, and a new video featurette explores the lore and mythology surrounding the main plot and its characters.

The trailer reveals that the film will retain one crucial element seen in the games as the movie will depict the centuries-old war between the Templars and Assassins. While the Templars aim to gain power in order to control the world, the Assassins aim to uphold freedom.

Just like in the video games, the main character, Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender), is captured and forced to undergo a unique procedure that lets him experience the memories of his ancestor. In the film, he will be diving into the memories of his ancestor, Aguilar, who is from 15th-century Spain.

The trailer hints that Aguilar is a member of the Assassins, and the reason Callum was chosen was because Aguilar may know the whereabouts of a relic that both the Assassins and Templars are after. Gamers familiar with the franchise will notice that the trailer hints that this item is the Apple of Eden.

Jeremy Irons, who plays Abstergo CEO Alan Rikkin, also states that all of the bloodlines linking to former Assassins have gone dark. This would indicate that all of the known descendants of Assassins have gone into hiding, are dead, or are missing, and now, Callum is the only one they have left.

Given that Rikkin is in the film, it is widely speculated that the people who have captured Callum are members of the Templars. It is rumored that some employees are secretly Assassins, and they may be there to help Callum retrieve the item and to ensure they can get it before the Templars do.

"Assassin's Creed" opens in theaters on Dec. 21.
