While Ubisoft is not planning to release a new "Assassin's Creed" video game at the moment, the franchise was still highlighted during the studio's E3 2016 press conference when they released a new video update for the upcoming film adaptation.

The trailer features behind-the-scenes action showing how lead star Michael Fassbender performed the explosive stunts in the upcoming film. It also shows several clips that feature some of the sets used in the film to take the viewers from the modern day where Callum Lynch (Fassbender) found out that his ancestor Aguilar de Nerha is connected to the secret Assassins society. But when the past began to manifest through Lynch's unlocked genetic memories, the society's greatest enemy, Knights Templar, also started to run after him.

Unlike the video games that were set in the past, the events in the film adaptation will be mostly set in the present times. Ubisoft Motion Pictures Vice President of Global Marketing Stephan Simard explained the reason during the E3 2016 presentation.

"We're not interested in telling the same stories from the games that have already been told so well. Rather, we're looking to bring a new dimension to the universe," the Ubisoft executive stated, as reported by IGN. "Working in the present day really gave a lot of freedom to develop new storylines and characters who are very three-dimensional and emotional, and bring in a wider audience as well as excite our existing fans with new stories to engage with."

The game studio also revealed that they are hoping to get a PG-13 rating for the film, but Simard admitted that they still have to submit it to the MPAA to get the official movie rating.

Aside from Fassbender, Oscar Award-winning actors Jeremy Irons and Marion Cotillard are also appearing in the movie.

The "Assassin's Creed" film is scheduled to open in cinemas on Dec. 21, 2016.
