Yahoo! News recently revealed the first official image of actor Michael Fassbender in costume for the upcoming "Assassin's Creed" movie, where he will be playing a character named Callum in the modern days and his ancestor Aguilar in 15th-century Spain. A new report indicates that although new, Callum and the film's events will take place in the same shared universe as the "Assassin's Creed" games and books. 

According to a report from IGN, Aymar Azaizia, the head of content for all "Assassin's Creed" properties, chatted with fans via Twitter and revealed several spoilers regarding the film's plot and setting. One of his responses revealed that the film is set in the same world as the one gamers are familiar with. 

"We share the same universe. Elements in the film have consequences as in our games, comics, and books," he explained in one post. "It's a brand new story, with new characters set in our universe. It's possible you may find some familiar faces." 

Azaizia continued to explain that Callum is different from Desmond, Clay and the other main characters already seen in the franchise. He also stated that like the games, the film will not be entirely set in 15th-century Spain, as the modern-day setting will also be very important. 

The film will still follow the same procedure, however: Callum will enter a device called the Animus which will allow him to relive the memories of his ancestor Aguilar. This will help him and his allies discover clues in finding ancient weapons and other secrets to defeat the ancient order of the Knights Templar. 

Azaizia also stated that familiar faces may pop up in the film. Since the movie takes place in the 15th century, it is possible that fans may see Ezio Auditore da Firenze, the main character in the game "Assassin's Creed II," which is set in France at around the same time period.

"Assassin's Creed" opens in theaters on Dec. 21, 2016.
