Lewis Hamilton and team mate Nico Rosberg will head a Mercedes one-two again on the grid for the Austrian Grand Prix. They managed to claim the front of the grid once again despite both drivers going off on their final laps of the qualifying session.

Hamilton has admitted that he thought he had lost pole after spinning at Turn One on his final qualifying lap. The incident seemed to leave open the chance for Rosberg to steal pole position from him. However, Rosberg them followed his team mate, spinning off at the final corner on his last lap, meaning he remained in second spot.

Behind the two Mercedes will be Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel on third and Williams's Felipe Massa on fourth.

Hamilton spoke about the qualifying session afterwards: "It was quite a difficult qualifying with the track conditions. I was grateful I got my third lap in on the first run in Q3. I was pushing that bit extra on the next run and just locked the rears.

"I wasn't too concerned about losing pole at that time because I was trying to get the car going, but obviously afterwards I was thinking: 'I probably lost it there.'"

Meanwhile, Rosberg has said, "Definitely gutted, but Lewis was 0.2secs up on the previous lap and I was 0.2secs exactly up at that point so I knew I had to go for it."

He added, "It was very close in terms of beating Lewis so I knew I needed to keep pushing and I just exaggerated it. It's frustrating because it was possible. I was equal to Lewis and it just went wrong - I was on the cusp before the last two corners."

After both Mercedes drivers suffered errors, the focus switched to Vettel, who then had the opportunity to snatch pole from both, however, he could only get to within 0.355 seconds of Hamilton in his final lap.

Briton, Hamilton, will be on the pole for the seventh time in eight races this season, and if he and his team can get their strategies correct then there is no reason to think why he cannot claim another first place finish and extend his lead at the top of the drivers' championship.

However, he still has a lot of work to do to make sure he stays up in first, and today's race is sure to be another tense affair.

Today's Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring is located on a hillside, providing a wonderful view of the Styrian mountains, and the course is a challenging one for the drivers; there are a few flat corners that should be a bit different and an extra challenge for the drivers.
