"Bates Motel" season 4 episode 9 ended on a shocking cliffhanger as Norman (Freddie Highmore) attempted to commit murder-suicide as he turned into his "Mother" persona and attempted to kill both himself and his mother, Norma (Vera Farmiga), by filling the house with carbon monoxide. A new report suggests that this may lead to the events seen in the original 1960 film "Psycho."

In the original film, Norman Bates was already living alone after his mother and her boyfriend had allegedly shot each other to death. By the end of the movie it was revealed that Norman killed them both and the series' executive producer, Carlton Cuse, reveals that the season 4 finale may be building up to this crucial moment.

Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, Cuse confirmed that the finale episode would immediately pick off from the ending of episode 9 and that it would set up the events of the fifth season, which is assumed to be the final season of the show.

"For Kerry and I, this is a plan that we started talking about the very first year of the show and was part of why we wanted to define the journey of the show as being five seasons," Cuse explained, hinting at the direction season 5 will take. "It's a show that has a defined beginning, middle and end, and we are now moving into the end game."

There is no guarantee that Norma would wake up in the upcoming finale and fans speculate that this may cause Sheriff Romero (Nestor Carbonell) to get violent with Norman, causing the two to get into a fight that will eventually lead to Romero's death, setting up season 5 as the show's adaptation of the original film.

However, the wild card is Norman's elder brother Dylan (Max Thieriot) as the character does not exist in the movie. Many fans speculate he will move out of the area, together with Emma (Olivia Cooke), but there is the possibility that Norman will kill him as well.
