'Battlefield 5' release date rumors: Game reportedly set in World War I, to launch after E3

EA DICE is currently developing the next "Battlefield," game and according to a report from IGN, a German retailer site has leaked information regarding the next title. Some of the information leaked via World of Games, including when the title may potentially release and what era it is set in.

The information on the retail site has been altered but Twitter user Thrillho (Liam Robertson) was able to take a screenshot of the original post. "Battlefield 5" is described as a "multiplayer tactical shooter in World War I" and the listing states that the game will release by Oct. 26. this year.

World of Games has since altered the listing, changing the description to simply "multiplayer tactical shooter" and the release date has also been altered to October, with no specific date attached. It is listed for a release on the PC, Xbox One and PS4.

As stated in a report from Game Rant, the choice of setting "Battlefield 5" in World War I is odd given that most FPS games are set in either in World War II, the modern era or in some version of a science fiction-inspired future. The popularity of World War II games is also noted to be becoming popular once again, with the crowd-funded game "Battalion 1944" successfully hitting its goal on Kickstarter.

However, despite the odd choice, it still falls in line with previous statements from EA DICE that "Battlefield" would return to the military setting. Their most recent games, particularly "Battlefield Hardline," were set in the modern day with cops and robbers in place of a military war setting.

In regards to the Oct. 26 release date, it is further explained that this may simply be a placeholder and is only temporary until the publishers inform the retail site when the game is really coming out. However, it is likely that "Battlefield 5" will release at some time close to the estimated placeholder date unless delayed for further development.
