Better Call Saul Season 3 spoilers: Gus Fring to return - what to expect

Giancarlo Esposito to return as Gustavo 'Gus' Fring in 'Better Call Saul' season 3. AMC

One of the biggest characters in AMC's Breaking Bad, Gus Fring will most likely return for the third season of Better Call Saul, the prequel and spinoff of the hit series.

Lead star Bob Odenkirk, who plays lawyer Jimmy McGill who eventually turns into Saul Goodman, the go-to guy of big time crime syndicates in New Mexico, said that the show's fans were quick to decode the series' message based on the first letters of each episode which form the word "Fring's Back."

"Well the writers always do clever things, there's little clues all over the show, visual clues, and one of the things they have done...somebody worked out the puzzle that the acronym or the first letter of each episode of last season spelled out a sentence, 'Fring's Back'" he said.

In a report by Movie News Guide, the actor said that the people behind the show were also surprised that the easter egg they left would be found out so quickly and the show's fans picked up the clue.

While Esposito's return to the franchise is expected, netizens have pitched theories about his storyline pre-Walter White. Breaking Bad already touched on the character's back story, and now, there are theories that he may be outed as a closet gay character.

In an earlier interview with showrunner Peter Gould gave some insight into the possible role of Fring in Jimmy and Mike's life.

"Now that the cat is out of the bag, we're certainly thinking Gus Fring had a hand in what happened with Mike at the end of season two. Having said that, Gus Fring works in mysterious ways, he casts a long shadow, he works indirectly.Personally I think we'd feel a little worried about disappointing the fans if their hopes were raised they would see wall-to-wall Gus Fring next season. Whether he appears in episode one, two, three, four, five, or any of them, is still up in the air," he said.
