Bible Society Literacy Project Reaches Out to Thousands in Indonesia

The Bible Society are currently undertaking upon a literacy project in Indonesia. The initiative, led by the Indonesian Bible Society has registered more than 2,300 adults and children to learn to read and write.

The project has been run over the period of nine months, and a huge team of 200 tutors has led the literacy-based classes. The project has been gratefully received by natives, with some students even walking several miles just to come to the sessions.

Participants have been able to learn these basic-literacy skills that are so often taken for granted in western culture, but in addition to this, the Bible Society has ensured that each student is taught a valuable life skill, as well as being aided in approaching the Bible.

The Bible Society is a Christian charity that has put as its ultimate goal, to make the Bible heard all over the world. It hopes to bridge the Bible to people’s every day lives.

According to workers at the Bible Society, the project has been “a great success!”

Sessions were set up not just to tell people about the Bible and the teachings of Christ, but has gone much further, giving participants the opportunity to read and understand the Bible for themselves.

Milka Derma Manguma, who is the project co-ordinator for the Bible Society’s project in Indonesia said, “It is important that people do not only learn to read and write. They must also come to know the Word of God by heart.”

The Bible Society also told how the project was open to, and attracted people of all ages. One young man who attended the course testified, “I have never been to school in my life so I never knew about alphabets or numbers. But now I can read and write.”

The Bible Society is part of a global alliance, which contains more then 140 Bible Societies across the world. In partnership they work to make the Bible available, credible and accessible to all people.
