Hopes for the renewal of HBO's dark comedy drama series "Big Little Lies" remain strong after actress and co-executive producer Reese Witherspoon confirmed that there are talks for the show's second season.

In an interview during the 2017 Blue Book Collection event held by Tiffany and Co., Witherspoon admitted to E! News that she and co-star and fellow executive producer Nicole Kidman are in talks with book author Liane Moriarty for "Big Little Lies" season 2. "Yeah, Nicole and I just spoke about it three days ago," Witherspoon told the news outlet.

The Australian author also mentioned in a separate interview with The Sydney Morning Herald that the producers of the TV adaptation of her novel with the same title approached her to discuss the possibility of season 2.

"I have started to think about ways this could continue," Moriarty stated. "The producers have asked me to see if I can come up with some ideas. I wouldn't write a new book but perhaps a new story and then we'll see what happens."

The seven-episode miniseries concluded after Celeste (Kidman), Madeleine (Witherspoon), Jane (Shailene Woodley), Renata (Laura Dern), and Bonnie (Zoë Kravitz) decided to cover up for each other after Bonnie pushed Celeste's husband Perry (Alexander Skarsgård) to his death.

The author also mentioned that she is very open to the idea, since it will be fun to see where she can take the story's major characters after the plot of the first season.

According to Moriarty, one of her plans for the possible second season of "Big Little Lies" is to feature the backstory of Bonnie on TV, since it was neglected in season 1.

However, the show's director Jean-Marc Vallée is not too keen on making another season for the show based on his interview with The Hollywood Reporter. "Let's move on and do something else! If there's an opportunity to reunite with Reese, Nicole and these characters of course, I'll be a part of it, but Big Little Lies 1 is a one-time deal. Big Little Lies 2? Nah," the director stated. "The end is for the audience to talk about. Imagine what you want to imagine and that's it. We won't give you a season two because it's so good like this. Why spoil it?"

HBO has yet to react regarding the renewal rumors of "Big Little Lies" for its next season.
