BitTorrent is known to many as one of the best sites for torrent sharing. Now, the company is also looking into direct image file sharing through its latest app, Shoot. 

One of the key features of Shoot is that files sent over the app and shared between mobile devices can be received regardless of the smartphone's software, meaning it will have cross-platform capability. Android users can pass along pictures to iOS and Windows Mobile devices, and vice versa. 

According to Eric Pounds, BitTorrent Sync's vice president of product management, having cross-platform support is a big plus for any mobile device app nowadays.

He told VentureBeat, "If you've ever experienced a situation where you're on iOS and a friend next to you has an Android phone, sending something like a big batch of photos or a long video is a challenge."

He also said that since the app doesn't require another third-party storage, users can quickly exchange image and video files in real-time. In addition, there is no limit to the size and number of files that can be sent and received using the Shoot app.

Pounds added, "We based the use case around spontaneity: You could be at a concert with friends, recording a video; on vacation with your family, taking tens/ hundreds of pictures; maybe at a birthday dinner, capturing a group serenade." 

Since the app is from BitTorrent, it also comes with the proprietary Sync technology. This feature allows users to move files directly from one device to the other without having to go through a cloud service. And because there is no process involved in the middle, privacy and security is assured, as the files can be accessed only by the recipient and the sender. 

The app is free for use up to three sendings, and if users want to try Shoot for a longer time, they would have to purchase the app for $1.99.
