"Black Sails" has become the go-to series when it comes to fulfilling a need to watch pirates other than Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), and the third season of the show will be bringing in Ray Stevenson as the legendary pirate Edward Teach aka Blackbeard.

Speaking with Collider, showrunners Jonathon Steinberg and Robert Levine reveal a little bit more regarding Stevenson's take on the iconic character and what fans can expect when Blackbeard enters the current narrative. 

According to Steinberg, Stevenson physically meets the standards that fans would expect of a portrayal of Blackbeard. He is also said to be more than a typical villain and will appear as a different kind of pirate from those on Nassau.

"We wanted Edward Teach, the pirate, to feel like he came from a different time and place. He came from the old neighborhood, and he's a guy who pirated under a code that feels like it's being upset and ignored by this next generation of guys who are in charge," Steinberg explained.

Levine also explains that in casting a role for an actor with the pedigree of Ray Stevenson, it is only important that they could get more than just the "gravitas and physical presence" of the pirate Blackbeard. In order to do so, Levine explains that they have given Blackbeard a sense of vulnerability, ensuring that despite all odds he is still a human being.

According to a report from the IB Times, it is yet unclear if main character Captain Flint (Toby Stephens) will be joining forces with Blackbeard's former protege Charles Vane (Zach McGowan) to take down the British or if either one or both of them will be facing Blackbeard himself.

The latest promotional trailer for "Black Sails" season 3 [below] gives fans a much better look at Stevenson as Blackbeard while also teasing the possible conflict he will have against Flint.
