BlackBerry Classic, Passport updates: CEO happy with inventory problems

BlackBerry hasn't been making waves in the tech industry in the past years, but that may start to change now. It looks like BlackBerry's new products are headed for new heights.

BlackBerry has already introduced BlackBerry Passport. It is a phablet that sports a unique square body, similar to that of a passport. CEO of BlackBerry John Chen is very hopeful that the BlackBerry Passport will put the company back into the map and even pull in a growth trajectory for its sales.

So far, the BlackBerry Passport is doing great and it looks like it can be a source of hope for the company. According to Bloomberg, the device has already pre-sold 200,000 units in just the first two days of pre-selling. It sold out on BlackBerry's website within six hours and 10 hours on Amazon.com. In fact, BlackBerry is now facing inventory problems as there are still many people who want to order, but can't.

Despite the lack of inventory, Chen is very happy with what's happening. He sees it positively saying that they need not mass-produce the phablet just to be able to cope with the demand. This lets them focus on the quality of the device.

"I'm glad to have inventory issues. It shows that people want the phone. We took a very conservative approach and didn't order too many," Chen said.

Chen also shared that BlackBerry is now focusing on 30 percent of the smartphone market who see their phones as a business tool rather than an entertainment portal.

"That is not a space that we can afford to be in now. Being sexy and being a workhorse are two different things," Chen explained. And clearly, he prefers to be the workhorse.

The Passport was unveiled last June and by November, BlackBerry will introduce the Classic. The BlackBerry Classic is exactly what it says it is, the classic Blackberry phone everyone loved. It has a physical QWERTY keypad, trackball and every basic thing BlackBerry fans loved about the classic phones.

It looks like BlackBerry has done their homework well. With the launch of their two newest products, hopefully, they can gain traction and start heading up the smartphone market where they deserve to be.
