'Blindspot' season 3 plot, cast spoilers: EP Gero on Archie Panjabi's potential return as Nas Kamal

The second season of "Blindspot" saw Nas Kamal (Archie Panjabi) close her last case on the NBC show as the character was written out in episode 18, "Senile Lines." Instead of holding Kurt (Sullivan Stapleton) accountable for the team's failure to catch Sandstorm, Nas took the fall, ending her almost season-long role as the head of Zero Division. It remains unknown whether or not she is gone for good.

Nas has been a polarizing character for "Blindspot" fans since she was introduced in the season 2 premiere. She was a National Security Agency operative whose allegiance could either go away since she was working with the team and surveilling them at the same time.

However, as the season progressed, Nas ultimately became a full part of the task force. She acted as Kurt's second in command and love interest.

Although news of her departure was no surprise given her recurring status on the show, many fans have since been wondering whether she would make a return in the near future. After all, the character was not killed off. She even appeared in the season 2 finale to interrogate Shepherd (Michelle Hurd).

Thankfully, "Blindspot" is not fully closing the door on Nas. When she does return though, executive producer Martin Gero says she will no longer play a pivotal role.

Gero did stress that they want to have her back as much as possible. "We're happy to have her at any point," he told the TV Fanatic. "Archie's just a consummate pro and has one of the best on-set demeanors I've ever run into."

The showrunner has long admired Panjabi for her performance. In a past statement, he revealed they kept expanding Nas' story arc "because she's so great and we love having her." That was also the reason why they decided not to kill her character, unlike its two previous ex-regulars, Marianne-Jean Baptiste's Bethany Mayfair and Ukweli Roach's Robert Borden/Nigel Thornton.

"We just love having her around so much, and we didn't need someone to die at this particular moment, so we left it with a question mark," he explained.

"Blindspot" season 3 premieres on Friday, Oct. 27, at 8 p.m. EDT on NBC.
