BMW has released the first official images of the new 8 Series. The upcoming coupe is seen undergoing rigorous testing in Aprilia, Italy.

According to the German automaker, a close-to-production prototype of the 8 Series is currently completing endurance tests on the high-speed circuit in order to optimize driving dynamics. The upcoming coupe's acceleration, braking and steering behavior are all being analyzed ahead of the official launch later this year.

"The test drives under the most severe conditions show that we are right on target with our concept for the new BMW 8 Series Coupe. The vehicle dynamics already achieved are absolutely impressive. Our customers and fans can look forward to a genuine sports car," said Klaus Fröhlich, board member of BMW AG, Development and Research, who also oversees the test program in Italy.

BMW also revealed that since the new 8 Series is being developed alongside the M8 and M8 GTE race car, the production coupe will be influenced by the world of motorsports and will most likely benefit from knowledge that the automaker gains from the race track.

Though the 8 Series featured in the official images is still heavily camouflaged, it appears to have a modern design and sports car proportions.

The upcoming coupe was previewed by the 8 Series Concept, which was unveiled at the 2017 Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este last May. However, based on the exterior's stretched lines and flat silhouette, the production coupe will be a pared-down version of the concept vehicle. Nevertheless, the inspiration of the 8 Series Concept is evident.

The upcoming 8 Series is will serve as a replacement for the 6 Series coupe, which will end production later this year. An 8 Series convertible is also said to be in development and will also serve as a replacement for the 6 Series soft-top model.

Following its release, the 8 Series will compete with vehicles like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, the Bentley Continental GT and the Maserati Gran Turismo.

The BMW 8 Series Coupe is expected to make its official debut at the Geneva International Motor Show in March, although the German automaker has yet to confirm.
