As previously reported, it has been confirmed that Gearbox, developer of the first two "Borderlands" games and the recently launched "Battleborn," will indeed work on "Borderlands 3" at some point, but a report from Tech Times indicates that the game may not be ready in time for a 2017 release.

According to the report, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford stated during this year's PAX East convention that the game would "probably not" be coming out soon. It was further indicated that the developers were currently preoccupied with the work they have for "Battleborn" and might need to focus on another IP before going back to their established series.

"It depends on how you define soon," Pitchford explained. "There'll almost certainly be more 'Borderlands,' but we need to figure out what that is. I don't even know if it's 'Borderlands 3,' but yeah. There are people working on 'Borderlands' things for the future at Gearbox but we haven't announced anything yet."

His statements do confirm that there is a team working on something new for the franchise but the company has yet to make any official announcements. It was expected that "Borderlands 3" might be announced during this year's E3 or San Diego Comic Con but both events passed by without a singe mention of the game.

Without Gearbox even mentioning a new "Borderlands" game in two of the biggest events of the year it is possible that they just don't have anything to show for the time being. The game might be in the earliest stages of development and might not even be ready for a 2017 release, hinting it will launch for PS4 and Xbox One by 2018 or later.

"Battleborn" and its DLC do contain a lot of Easter eggs for "Borderlands" enthusiasts but those are the only new "Borderlands" elements fans will get until Gearbox officially unveils the new game.
