"Boyhood" is a very unconventional movie as it was produced in a span of twelve years, allowing the team to film the life of the main family as they grew older, especially that of the main character who went from grade school to college. Director Richard Linklater previously stated during the Sundance festival that he was thinking of a sequel that would follow the boy in his 20's.

Ethan Hawke, who played the main character's father, recently sat down for an interview with the Collider and gave his insight on the likelihood of a sequel. 

"No. I feel that Boyhood was so unique and the reason why it works is because it actually does have a beginning, middle and end. All of us Americans understand the grid of 1st through 12th grade," Hawke explained. "I mean, I think Rick is open to anything, so he's kind of misleading you to say that. He'd think about doing anything." 

This gives "Boyhood 2" a 50-50 chance of actually happening. The director is open to doing it but it appears that Hawke doubts that it will ever happen, especially since doing the first one was no easy task. 

According to a report by Cinema Blend, one of the main strengths of the first film is that it had a structure to follow. The film followed Mason (Ellar Coltrane) as he aged from 6 to 18, going from first grade to entering college. This gave the film a systematic structure that would no longer exist once the character leaves college. From there, it becomes a "free-for-all." 

However, this is not the first time Linklater turned to unconventional film technics. His previous three films starring Hawke, "Before Sunrise," "Before Sunset," and "Before Midnight," had nine years in between each of their releases. 

While Linklater might not be working on "Boyhood 2" anytime soon, he has previously finished shooting "That's What I'm Talking About" and is set to direct "Where'd You Go, Bernadette."
