Season 5 of the cop comedy TV series "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" premiered last Sept. 26 and the first episode had a dark undertone to start off their fifth run.

Showrunner Dan Goor told Variety that since the new season will be set mostly inside the prison, events will lead to a darker shade than the previous seasons. Since detectives Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) and Rosa Diaz (Stephanie Beatriz) are framed and sent to the one place where most of the people in it hate them, season 5 will be another roller coaster ride for fans.

A bearded Jake shows up in the first episode of the fifth season of "Brooklyn Nine-Nine." Framed by Lt. Melanie Hawkins (Gina Gershon) for a string of bank robberies, Jake and Rosa will have to serve their time in prison for 15 years. He has made friends with cannibal bunkmate Caleb (Tim Meadows, "The Goldbergs") and has protective custody at the South Carolina Maximum Security Facility.

Goor told Entertainment Weekly, "It's fun to see Jake on the other side of the looking glass. It's really Jake at his most vulnerable and having to live off his wits, and that was exciting."

One of the exciting parts of the first episode was when Caleb arranged for Jake to meet with the gang leader, Romero (Lou Diamond Philips). Romero gave Jake access to a cell phone in exchange for one hundred Picante-beef flavored ramen soup. The trade was successful but was eventually discovered by the warden. This led to Jake losing his protective custody.

Samberg's character's main goal is to stay alive and get back home to Amy Santiago (Melissa Fumero). So the next thing Jake does is enlist himself in the prison's gangs to secure his safety. Except for ISIS, no one wanted to let the incarcerated cop in their group. Romero is willing to let Jake join but first, he must kill the guard named Wilson.

"Brooklyn Nine-Nine" season 5 airs every Tuesday on Fox at 9:30 p.m. EDT.
