Buffalo Bills roster rumors 2015: Tyrod Taylor named as starting quarterback

The Buffalo Bills will be led on offense by quarterback Tyrod Taylor when they open the 2015 season against the Indianapolis Colts after he was named as the team's starter.

Taylor competed with  EJ Manuel and Matt Cassel for the starting quarterback position.

Bills head coach Rex Ryan's decision was a bit surprising since Taylor has never started in his entire career in the National Football League (NFL).

Last season, in Taylor's fourth season with the Baltimore Ravens who drafted him in the sixth round in 2011, he only played in one game.

But the 26-year-old quarterback's impressive performance this preseason including his passing, in which he completed 24 of 31 passes for 236 yards, was enough for Ryan to make him a starter.

Ryan praised Taylor's running ability, citing the quarterback's time in Virginia Tech, and added, according to ESPN, "But we brought him in because No. 1 — it's a brand new offense — but how he grasps our offense, and then his ability, not just his mobility, but his ability to throw the ball was the overriding thing. And I think he did a tremendous job of that."

Before making his decision, Ryan said he was not going to name a starting quarterback during the preseason, believing that it would help them; but he changed his mind so that his players will not get "bombarded" with questions, ESPN reported.

Now, Ryan will need to decide on who will be the main backup for Taylor and it will be either Manuel or Cassel.

The Bills still has one game left in the 2015 preseason and it will be on the road against the Detroit Lions.

Buffalo is currently at 2–1 this preseason, losing their first game against the Carolina Panthers but winning their next two over the Cleveland Browns and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Bills will open their 2015 season hosting the Colts at the Ralph Wilson Stadium on Sept. 13.
