"Call of Duty: WWII" topped the sales charts for the month of December as well whole year 2017.

Despite critical reception, the "Call of Duty" franchise always garners massive sales whenever a new one comes out and their latest entry is no exception. However, thanks to a report by NPD analyst Mat Piscatella, it seems that "Call of Duty: WWII" not only dominated sales for December but was also the top seller of 2017. This also marks the eight consecutive December that a "Call of Duty" game was the best seller for the month.

Just behind "Call of Duty: WWII" were "Star Wars: Battlefront II" and "Super Mario Odyssey," although it should be noted that the last two do not include digital sales numbers.

In addition to that, Piscatella also reports that, in December, the video game industry went up 10 percent across software, hardware, and accessory sales to a total of $3.3 billion, with most of it being attributed to hardware sales. For the year of 2017, video game sales went up by 11 percent to a total of $14.6 billion.

This is not too surprising given how often people will purchase new consoles in the holiday season either for themselves or for others with the Nintendo Switch being the best-selling console of the month. However, despite the Switch's success, its March release could not catch up to the PlayStation 4, which was the best-seller of the year.

Even though it was not able to match the PlayStation 4's numbers, the Switch did manage to break some records during its release. Within the first ten months of launch, the Nintendo Switch sold more consoles than any others in the past.

"On a time-aligned basis through the first ten months on the market, Nintendo Switch has sold more consoles than any other platform in history," said Piscatella.
