There were concerns heading into this race that things were going from bad to worse for Lewis Hamilton. After needlessly losing 10 points of his lead over teammate Nico Rosberg in the last Grand Prix in Monaco, Hamilton suffered a crash in practice a few days ago, and his final practice session was messy to say the least. The British driver was slowest of all drivers in the final practice and it looked like he might have some serious issues coming into the qualifying.

However, Hamilton put all the distractions and problems behind him to set the pace and claim his sixth pole position in the last seven races. His qualifying time was 0.309 seconds ahead of Rosberg.

Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen managed to claim third place in the qualifying, where as as team-mate Sebastian Vettel couldn't do any better than 16th after a hybrid system failure.

Coming into today's race Hamilton's lead in the drivers' championship table has been cut to just 10 points, which isn't much considering how dominant Hamilton has been through the early part of this season.

He will be desperate to claim another win here today to extend his lead once more and make sure that he doesn't allow Rosberg to continue to cut down on his lead.

However, it won't be easy today as even though Hamilton has pole, he certainly has looked less than completely comfortable on the Canada circuit through the practice sessions. Despite being fastest in both practice sessions on Friday, Hamilton did make a number of errors, including his crash during the torrential rainfall.

Talking about qualifying, Hamilton has said, "It felt amazing. It wasn't the easiest of days. P3 was quite tough. I didn't get any laps, mostly my fault but I got the set-up where I wanted it to be. I won my first grand prix here and to come back and finally get another pole is very special."

Meanwhile, Rosberg said, "I was really on a roll, it felt really good and then the end did not come together at all. I had less rear grip on the first set especially. But fair play to Lewis and in the race is tomorrow there are still some good chances so it is not over yet."
